Looking at him now, it's hard to believe that Daniel O'Brien was bullied when he was young. His family moved a lot, he lived in 5 different states before the age of 11. Because he was often the new kid, he and his brothers got into a lot of fights. This gave him an interest in martial arts. His parents were nervous about what might happen if Daniel and his brothers actually learned to fight, so they were reluctant to let them train.
Daniel was finally able to change his parent's mind, so he began training in the martial arts at the age of 15 under Johnny Lee Smith. It was then that he began to realize that it wasn't just about fighting, martial arts is about learning how to protect yourself, how to avoid fights, how to become a better person, and finding the confidence to be yourself.
Johnny was well known for many things, he is a multi-time national champion in Karate and starred in the hit martial arts TV series WMAC Masters as the character "Tiger Claw". Johnny studied many of the martial arts extensively. He believes every martial art has something to offer. He began training Brazilian Jiujitsu in 1993 under the masters Rickson Gracie and Carlos Machado. Eventually founding Triad Martial Arts in 1996, to combine the teachings of Karate-do, Kabuto, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Making use of this experience, he later founded the most thorough law enforcement training program in America, SSGT.
Along with his brothers, Daniel received his black belt in Karate in 2009. Daniel then earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2011, becoming Triad's first black belt in both arts. Through hard work and dedication, Daniel became Johnny's most highly decorated competitor, with many titles and accomplishments, including:
Daniel has devoted his life to the martial arts and to the expression of effortlessness through the techniques. He believes that anyone can use effective martial arts regardless of size, strength, age, or flexibility. He is on a mission to share the philosophy that he believes in, that your own mind is your best weapon or your worst enemy in a self-defense situation, the highest level of competition, or just in your everyday life. Martial arts teaches one to be humble, and through humility, one can learn to do anything. Daniel is considered one of today's top submission grapplers and has a style of jiu-jitsu that separates itself from the conventional styles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Daniel is currently a 2nd-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a 3rd-degree black belt in karate-do, he is one of the most sought-after Jiu Jitsu instructors in the country. He is the owner and head instructor of Triad Martial Arts in Alabama.
